How to Play Spot It & Dobble:
Official Game Rules

Whether you call it Dobble, Spot It, or custom matching cards, the math-based card matching game features 5 exciting mini-game modes. Learn them all below!

The One Golden Rule

Every single card in a deck shares exactly one symbol with every other card.

No matter which two cards you look at:

There is **always** one matching icon between them. To win, you must be the fastest player to spot the match, name the symbol out-loud, and either claim the card or discard it, depending on the active mini-game mode.

The 5 Mini-Game Modes

Vary your games by swapping between these classic match modes.

Mini-Game 1: The Tower

Objective: Accumulate the most cards.

Setup

Deal 1 card face down to each player. Place the remaining deck face up in the center.

How It Plays

On the count of three, players flip their card face up. You must look for a match between your card and the top card of the center deck. The first player to spot and name the match takes the top card from the center deck and places it on top of their own card. A new center card is revealed, and play continues until the center deck is empty.

Mini-Game 2: The Well

Objective: Be the first to get rid of all your cards.

Setup

Place 1 card face up in the center. Deal the remaining cards equally among all players face down.

How It Plays

On three, players flip their personal draw piles face up. Look for a matching symbol between the top card of your pile and the center card. The first to spot and name a match places their top card on top of the center card. Your card now becomes the new target card in the center. Repeat until one player has empty hands.

Mini-Game 3: Hot Potato

Objective: Avoid ending up with cards in your hand.

Setup

Each round, deal 1 card face down to each player. Put the rest of the deck aside.

How It Plays

On three, players flip their card onto their open palm. Look for a matching symbol between your card and any opponent's card. If you spot a match, name it and place your card face up on top of that opponent's card. If you have multiple cards stacked on your hand, you must use the top card to match. The last player holding all the cards loses the round and keeps them as penalty points.

Mini-Game 4: The Poisoned Gift

Objective: Have the fewest cards at the end.

Setup

Deal 1 card face down to each player. Place the rest of the deck face up in the center.

How It Plays

On three, players flip their cards. Look for a match between the center deck's top card and any opponent's card. The first player to spot and name a match takes the center card and places it on top of that opponent's card. The opponent now has a new card to match against. Play continues until the center deck is empty.

Mini-Game 5: The Triplets

Objective: Collect the most cards from a grid.

Setup

Lay 9 cards face up on the table in a 3x3 grid. The rest of the deck is face down.

How It Plays

All players look at the grid simultaneously. You must find 3 cards that all share the same matching symbol. Once found, shout the symbol name and take the 3 cards. Fill the empty spots in the grid with 3 new cards from the deck. Repeat until there are not enough cards left to make a triplet.

Winning the Match

How to crown the ultimate matching champion

Standard Tournaments

Play all 5 mini-games in order. The player who wins the most mini-games wins the overall tournament. If playing with card tallies, assign points: +1 point per card gained (The Tower, Poisoned Gift) or -1 point per card held (The Well, Hot Potato).

Fast Play

Play multiple rounds of a single mode (like **The Tower** or **Hot Potato**). Shuffling the deck between rounds keeps cards fresh. The player with the highest total score after 5 rounds wins the crown.

Frequently Asked Questions About Spot It / Dobble Rules

How does every card share exactly one match?

The game deck is designed using projective geometry (specifically finite projective planes). The math guarantees that any pair of cards chosen from the deck will have exactly one matching symbol in common. It is not magic — it is combinatorics!

How many players can play Spot It / Dobble?

The game is best played with 2 to 8 players. For larger groups, you can split into multiple tables, printing one copy of the PDF deck for each group.

Who wins the matching card game?

In most mini-games, the player who spots the matches the fastest and either accumulates the most cards (like in The Tower) or discards all of their cards first (like in The Well) is the winner. You can play multiple rounds and sum up the points.

What happens if two players spot a match at the same time?

The player who claims the card and names the matching symbol out loud first gets to keep or discard the card. If it is a dead tie, the card remains in play, or the players agree on a draw and split subsequent cards.
